Abstract
In the region of the Trier-Bitburger-Mulde (western part of the Eifel, Germany) investigation of the soil water balance has been undertaken since 1994. Based on these investigations the spatio-temporal variation of the amount of annual percolation water are determined using different approaches (direct and indirect methods). In this paper results of the gis-based calculation of the amount of percolation water on the basis of two different numerical models are presented. The results show that the percolation water dynamics is influenced by complex interactions between the special regional climatic conditions, soil properties, landuse patterns and topography. The suitability of the two applied models for calculating the amount of percolation water for low mountain ranges is evaluated. In both models the parameter topography (especially slope and aspect) and its impact on the soil water dynamics is not considered sufficiently. Thus the development of a special soil water model for low mountain regions is currently in progress.
