Abstract
In 1996 the Institute of Forest Protection started to elaborate a comprehensive Forest damage diagnosis system for pests and diseases occurring in Austrian forests. The basis data therefore are written expert opinions, which date back up to more than 40 years. The reasons for the development of the system were the preservation of scientific knowledge, an improved and more detailed documentation of damage, support of a comprehensive database, to ensure a quick and efficient research regarding most different requests and at least the development of an expert system, to allow quicker, automated elaboration of damage diagnosis. The damage documentation and information system consists of two major parts: - the database: containing a great number of information on the samples sent to the Federal Research Centre and on the symptoms found. - The photodocumentation: consisting of a database on more then 10.000 slides and an analogue video-documentation system which allows to take images as wellas video-sequences even at high magnifications.
