Abstract
The paper talks about seismic-induced instability processes in general, and about erosion processes in two alpine valleys induced by an earthquake in the north-western part of Slovenia on April 12, 1998, in particular. The general part of the paper presents the most important parameters of seismic-induced instability hazards, and the main characteristics of the above-mentioned earthquake. It follows a description of seismic-induced erosion processes due to the 1998 earthquake in two alpine valleys. The major erosion processes were numerous smaller and bigger rockfalls, followed by some slides in glacial deposits, and some debris flows and similar mass movements due to local heavy rainfalls. Some morphometric characteristics of major rockfalls in the Tolminka River valley are shown and discussed. The paper ends with a discussion on possible impacts of described processes on river regime in two valleys, together with a short description of undertaken and proposed water management countermeasures to minimise negative effects of consequences of accelerated erosion processes.
