- AbstractNeedles of six adult trees of Norway spruce were harvested in 1987. Four to six needle age classes of two branches of the 7th whorl per tree were divided into 2 alidried and analyzed without any pretratment. The other half was washed with chloroform according to Krivan and Schaldach (1986) and Keller et al. (1986) in order to remove airborne surface deposits trapped in the wax layer of the needles. The washed and the untreated needles were digested by HNO3 and analyzed by AAS, ICP, DCP and CHN for the following elements: N; P; K; Ca; Mg; S; Al; Cd; Cr; Fr; Mn; Ni; Pb; Ti; V; Zn. For some elements (Al; Cr; Fe; Ni; Pb; Ti; V) highly significant differences between the treatments indicated a considerable amount of removable deposits, which may lead to an overestimate of the internal pool of essential elements. The trace elements Ni, Ti, and V, layers, are considered to be indicators for air pollution. The method was found to be suitable and reliable.
