The author reports his impressions of the Austrian and Italian way of thinking regarding maintenance and which he has experienced during the studiy-tour in Carinthia (Austria) in 1998. He also tries to compare them with some Japanese cases. Historically and culturally important constructions are here very carefully repaired. They were mainly made of wood, stone and rock. In this report two cases are treated; one is the case of torrent control works in the torrential watershed Apriacherbach in the village of Heiligenblut and the other is that of Fusine Natural Park in northern Italy. Finally two examples on the Japanese maintenance way of thinking are introduced.
