- AbstractThe study is based on 4 thinning trials in pure beech stands which have been measured for more than 100 years and 5 trials which were established in 1991 in Lower Saxony. Target of the different trials is to observe the influence of different types of thinning as well as different thinning grades on timber volume and financial yield. In contrast to the older trials all younger experiments are thinned from above. Tending objective is a different number of selected and marked crop trees between 100 and 300 stems/ha. The thinning grade of the different treatments is derived from basal area development of unthinned plots. The analysis of growth shows a high current annual diameter increment until age 140. Maximum diameter increment of 1,2 cm/year was measured in established more recently trials. The observed development of crown surface area clarifies the decreasing number of crop trees from 200 to 80 stems/ha with advancing age. Beeches with medium-sized crowns are more efficient regarding productivity than trees with extreme large crowns. The diameter development of different crop tree collectives emphasizes the significance of early and strong thinnings. The results confirm the relevant silvicultural treatment of beech in Lower Saxony.
