In 1980, the Forest District of Lingen began planning, preparing and carrying out the initial afforestation of large tracts of forest-free landscapes the west of the Ems River. Twenty different tree species were planted and sown on a 400-ha area, which had previously been freed of peat. This article reports on the stands established and an initial balance of the forest's development is drawn. At present, this newly established forest reveals a great biodiversity, and this after only 18 years. It provides a distinct cultural and recreational enrichment in the lives of the people.
