After a long time of clear-cutting management, the Czech Republic comes back to close-to-nature (i.e. ecologically justified) forest management which dates back to the turn of the 19th and 20th century. The following examples of a long-term solution of three basic management situations can be found at 41 forest demonstrative plots: 1) predominant conversion of site unsuitable spruce and pine pure stands into mixed stands with adequate spatial and age strucuture (2) silviculture of beech, oak or mixed stands appropriate to site conditions and (3) forest stands newly established after air pollution disaster. The network of plots of European, national and regional importance is systematically followed up to serve for education and studies.
