Forestry research was in the center of general attention in the last decade, in particular in connection with efforts to find a suitable method of transformation, management and mainly funding of bodies involved in the research activities. Despite of changes necessarily needed for the oversized research organization of a socialist type, it was found as a positive factor that the forestry research institute was maintained. In 1998 the Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Forestry considered studies dealing, among others, with potential steps toward privatization of research in the forestry sector. Issues were consequently discussed by forestry public and the decision was taken to keep the Forestry and Game Management Research Institute - only one in the whole resort - as a contributory organization directly controlled by the government. The fact is that the state research institute has a lot to improve, namely in the use of resources, communication, ability to offer its expertise and public relations in general. Nevertheless it is a useful instrument of state administration and forest landowners, regardless of ownership category. The article provides with brief information on history of forestry research, the main issue resolved in the Forestry Research Institute as well as cooperation with Germany.
