Abstract
Damping off caused by various fungi (Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium spp., Pythium spp. etc.) is a significant risk when propagating coniferous species. The sole use of synthetic fungicides (containing benomyl, carbendazim, thiram etc.) against these damaging agents cannot yet meet the expectations of users (unsufficient efficiency, accumulation of toxic substances in the soil etc.); increasing interest is therefore paid to alternative control strategies (particularly biological control). Antibiotic 3890b, produced by biotechnical methods, can limit effectively mortality of pine and larch seedlings caused by damping off as shown by greenhouse experiments. This product is preferably used for seed pretreatment. It has only a low toxicity and is used in medicine.
