Inspite of the many uncertainties involved, anthropogenic climate change is considered to be one of the main global problems. This even more so after the surprising results of the analysis of the Greenland Grip ice core, which showed that very rapid climate oscillations in interglacial periods have occurred and that the stability of the climate during the last 10 000 years is a unique feature in earth history. Methods need to be developed to estimate the impacts of possible climate change on the hydrosphere, vegetation, humans, economy a.o. An attempt to describe climate in Austria for a moderate global warming scenario and the related impacts reveal amongst others significant effects on water resources, pre-alpine pine forests and wintertourism. Clearly there is a need for enhanced interdisciplinary research in this field.
