In Austria there is the largest closed area of riparian forests of Central Europe. After a description of the qualitative features of an alluvial ecosystem and the significance of the water dynamics, the actual qualitative parameters are relict ecosystem is required in form of the frame work of the IUCN, while additional amelioration of the stand structure, the water course network, the design of the ship channels and the banks should take place. A prevention of the riverbed-degradation by construction of a further hydroelectrical plant in the East of Vienna is rejected, as such a construction would endanger the whole conservation strategy and minimize the small remaining alluvial area.
