- AbstractErdmann developed his concept of "Silviculture on a natural basis" for the consolidation of pure scots pine stands on earlier heather moorland. This concept was established in the district of Neubruchhausen, later Erdmannshausen, with the working-plan report of 1895. This very early and goal-directed change of the growing stock gives us a lot of informations for the increasing propagation of broadleaved and mixed forests in the European forest management. Since today there is a general demand for an ecologically oriented silviculture, Erdmann belongs, like Möller or Gayer to the early leaders of this development. Erdmann's "Silviculture on a natural basis" is a concept for the conversion of pure scots pine pioneer forest into stable mixed forest. Soil protection, site specific species choice and propagation of mixed forest with beech as the dominant species are the main elements of Erdmann's silviculture strategy. the model of a two-aged high-forest was Erdmann's silviculture strategy for the conversion of the degraded scots pine forests and the simultanious large diameter timber production. Erdmann's silviculture transformed pioneer forest on devasted heathland directly into mixed forests with a high diversity. The extensive and future-oriented conversion of former scots pine stands in unique in North Germany. So the development in Erdmannshausen is in comparison to other districts an entire forest generation in advance. The earlier pioneer forests of Erdmannshausen are almost consolidated. For the increment of ecological stability of forests the German forest managements increasingly prefer mixed forests. Therefore Erdmann's silviculture concept and the forest created by himself are a succesful example. Schmidt was the first, who analysed 1958 the development of this forest in Erdmannshausen. Today at the end of one hundred years of conversion and accumulation of standing volume, a natural management of those stands is predominant in all silviculture methods. Single tree thinning, target diameter harvesting and permanent natural regeneration are the main new elements of silviculture in Erdmannshausen. The selection system will be the guideline for the future developments of the Erdmann-stands. The advantage of the selection is its high net yield and its stability.
