In the heartwood of oak occasionally a circle of several light-coloured tree rings can occur, which are called moon-ring. Its formation is initiated by broken branches in severe winter frost periods. The wounds can not efficiently be compartmentalised, so that in the damaged sapwood the later heartwood formation is distrubed.
