Abstract
The effect of drought on the decline of natural forest stands of Quercus cerris L. and Quercus pubescens Will. was investigated. Turkey oak suffered more than Qercus pubescens to water stress during particulary dry growing seasons. Water stressed Quercus cerris were also more susceptible to the attacks of Hypoxylon mediderraneum (De NOT.) Mill., a weakness parasite causing a necrotic disease on several species of oaks. Tissue parameters of Turkey oak trees as such as osmotic petential at Turgor Lost Point, osmotic potential at full saturation and bulk elastic modules were calculated in stands with different incidence of hypoxylon cankers; the differences measured between the two stands examined were discussed in spite of an adaptation to drought.
