Abstract
Hypoxylon atropunctatum is often a common colonizer of declining oak in the southern United States. Whether this fungus has a role in oak decline and mortality is unclear. Inoculations did not result in decline or death of field trees. The fungus is a latent colonizer of boles and branches of healthy-appearing trees and latently infects leaves and phloem of oak seedling sprouts. The fungus rapidly colonizes living tissues of detached oak stems in response to decreasing water content.
