Ceratocystis stenoceras, Ceratocystis piceae and Ceratocystis prolifera do not occur frequently in declining oaks in Austria. Furthermore, they do not behave as pathogenic fungi in inoculation experiments, neither under natural climatic conditions nor under water stress and even not in combination of water stress and infection by nematodes. They seem to be sometimes present as endophytes in the sapwood vessels, where they are able to stay alive for at least two years.
