Despite of the comparably low cattle stock density in Rhineland-Palatinate, about half on the total nitrogen deposition in the rineland-Palatinian forests results from agricultural production processes emitting NH3. On most of the research plots total N-deposition rates exceed critical loads. In order to protect forest ecosystems from further degradation (soil acidification, N-saturation, nutrient imbalances) and to avoid increasing nitrate loads in soil seepage water, measures are required to reduce NH3 emission more efficiently. In silviculture, for mitigating NH3 emission more efficiently. In silviculture, for mitigating the negative effects of N-saturation, disturbances like clearings, soil cultivation etc. should be avoided as far as possible.
