Abstract
In many European countries forest laws have been revised and amended in order to adjust to new social demands. Public policies addressing nature conservation, land use planning and renewable natural resources have produced legislation relevant to forests and forestry. National laws are increasingly influenced by international conventions and other legal instruments. The evolving regulatory framework reflects the growing importance of forests in sustainable development. It raises new issues with regard to the respective role of the public and private sectors, to the rights of land owners facing external demands, and to compensation arrangements between forest enterprises, user groups and public entities. It also calls for more efficient decision-making processes on sustainable forest resources management balancing local, national and global requirements.
