Abstract
The subsistence farmers in the high Andean Province Arque (2700-4500 m.a.s.l.; Bolivia) are subjected to an insufficient food security which is caused by historical and actual degradation of the (agro-)ecosystems. Assuming that a restoration of the basic resources of human life in this zone can be reached by use of them only a concept for the implementation of agroforestry measures (in a very broad sense) is sketched. It has been developed after profound botanical-ecological and participative sociological research and it promises to show a realistic way to a more sustainable land-use. An ecological-silvicultural component is the basis - however, a sociological component is the central element of the concept. The farmers are captured in a vicious circle of poverty and ecological degradation which alarmingly decreases traditional knowledge, will and capacity which are required to protect the natural resources. In this context it is important that the forestry measures are integrated in a interdisciplinary Bolivian-German food security project (PROSANA - CORDECO/GTZ) which simultaneously offers solution for prolems which are felt more acutely by the farmers (e.g. connencted with the agricultural production). This provides better chances for the forestry work to be successful. Further components of the concept concern technical, organizatoric, institutional and documentational aspects. The attention is drawn to the fact that food security projects in marginal zones in the high Andes with decreasing carrying capacity and low potential for development by preventing migration can be efficient instruments to protect tropical forests in the humid lowlands of Bolivia.
