- AbstractIn November 1998, the method of "electrical resistivity tomography" was tested for its suitability to detect colored heart wood on standing beech trees in the Hessian forest district of Witzenhausen. Electrical resistivity tomography seems to be a quite appropriate non-destructive testing tool for standing trees. A multielectrode equpment with multiplexer allows to measure apparent resistivities. These apparent resistivities depend on a configuration factor which has to be calculated for each particular electrode configuration. By an inversion algorithm, the apparent resistvities can be converted into a tomographic representation of the true distribution of resistivities inside the body. The results show that this technique is able to distinguish relatively small modifications of the electric conductivity and/or the electric resistivity in the wood body of the stem, provided that these factors are correlated with a modification of moisture and/or the electrolyte concentration. Since these modifications occur during the genesis of colored heart wood of beech, the technique of "electrical resistivity tomography" may represent a promising approach for the detection of colored heart wood within the girth limit felling of beech. In adition to this, the described method seems to be feasable both for a great number of other applications for different tree species and may give answers to a series of questions in the field of general tree diagnosis.
