- AbstractComparisons were made between 10- and 20-year-old Norway spruce stands in the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge) displaying no visible symptoms of damage and stands with more than 50% reduction of the assimilatory apparatus. Morphology of the root system and vitality and biomass of short roots in particular soil horizons were analysed. The morphology as well as health conditions of skeletal roots were not influenced by air pollution. Emissions considerably lower biomass of short and fine roots not only in total but especially in the upper soil horizons. Damaged stands have relatively more developed root systems in deaper soil layers. Emissins lower viability of short and fine roots as well.
