- AbstractIn many areas of Central Europe and Scaninavia soil acidification is a major factor responsible for forest decline. With increase in soil acidification, particularly below pH 5, the roots are exposed to an environment which poses various stresses on root growth and metabolism, either directly by increase in concentration of H+ and of toxic mineral elements like Al, or indirectly by decreasing the plant availability of various mineral nutrients. In the following the effects of soil acidification on root growth and nitrient and water uptake are summarized. Main emphasis is put on the principles of mechanisms by which soil acicity affects plant roots, and how and to which extent roots respond to the various stress factors or tolerate soil acicity stress.
