- AbstractThis paper presents an inverse numerical model to estimate flood discharges in complex river geometrics using information from Particle-Tracking-Velocimetry measurements. The numerical model is based on a finite-element solution of the 2D Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with a k-e turbulence model, allowing computations of the free water surface on adaptive, unstructured gids. The test case from the Saltina River, Brig, Switzerland, has a complex bed geometry and laboratory measurements of the water surface were available for transcirtical flow. The water depths are computed with an accuracy of =10% in this realistic example. The inverse modeling technique uses the Levenberg-Marquardt minimizing algorithm. When the synthetically generated water surface elevation and surface velocities are used, the discharge is estimated to =2%.
