- AbstractThis paper presents conditions in secondary coniferous stands in Austria from the data of the Austrian Forest Inventory (AFI). The objectives of the AFI are to obtain reliable forest data, to facilitate the development of production opportunities, and to provide insight into forest growing stock and increment with respect to timber quality and damage. The AFI regularly supplies comprehensive and basic data obtaining information about the Austrian forest including ecological and economical factors. The study uses the following definition for secondary coniferous stands: artifically regenerated coniferous stands on pure broadleaf sites. This means that pure Norway spruce stands growing on sites where naturally the Spruce-Fir-Beech associations are stocking, are not secondary coniferous stands, according to this definition. This study shows differences according to humustyp between secondary coniferous stands and current broadleaf stands. Further the conditions of the secondary coniferous stands in view of regeneration are examined. In many secondary coniferous stands the natural regeneration corresponds to the potential natural association.
