- AbstractIn the past the woodland of Austria was not only the place for timber and fuelwood production or a hunting place for the noblemen. Cultivation by burning over, forest farming, grazing, forest utilization and resin boxing were important forest rights to improve the living conditions of the rural inhabitants. Since the 13th century several yield regulations were established by the local administrations to meet the different demands of the rural population. Nevertheless the limited resources often led to considerable conflicts and to over-utilization of farm woodland in many different ways. Landscape has always produced evidence of sensible management systems. Although unsustainable and unadapted management systems were able to destroy the natural resources of cultural landscapes with the effect of soil erosion, flood and avalanches it is essential to note that, in consideration of concepts of sustainable management the over-utilization of the past has not any irreversible effect on the productive potential of the present region. On the other hand the study also proves that only the general knowledge of the historical economic development provides the premission for reviewing woodlands of the present time.
