The occurrence of yew (Taxus baccata L.) in (sub)urban settlements and adjacent forests, mainly within the conurbation of Berlin, is investigated by: 1. extracting vegetational releves from two forest districts, 2. an inquiry held among foresters, and 3. evaluating its occurrence in gardens by literature. In forests decreasing densities of seedlings and saplings are found with increasing distance from housing areas. One deer-free forest district exhibits numerous seedlings and saplings, some of them already part of the shrublayer, while all the other districts have only few seedlings and very small saplings- and those browsed - or none. Since forests contain no mature trees fructifying ones in housing areas (where yew reach considerable densities) are sources of seeds. Discussion concentrates on early life cycle states. It includes rough estimations of fruit set and survival over the first years including aspects of seed dispersal. A fatal threat for yew establishment in forests seems to be browsing. Finally extinction of wolf and bear with their influence on deer is considered as one of the reasons for retrogression of yew.
