Abandoned settlements represent a typical element of large military training areas. Before the Training Area Baumholder was established, almost 4 000 people living in 14 settlements and 14 farms, mills, forester's houses had to be resettled. The sites of these settlements can - though now being abandoned for more than 50 years - still distinctly be located by their flora and vegetation, as the distribution of ruderal village plants and ornamental plants is strictly limited to the areas of the former villages. During the years, succession remained almost undistrubed; meanwhile, aging thickets and bushes, dominated by Salix caprea, Sambucus nigra, Syringa vulgaris and various fruit trees characterize the sites. The former villages within military training areas represent a rare habitat, and valuable objects of research, though up to now their existence almost remained unnoticed.
