- AbstractAmong the airborne pollutants ozone, SO2, NOx, alcalic dusts and heavy metals are the most important forest-relevant components. The role of VOCs in connection with forest dieback is still uncertain, since concrete VOC-induced injuries to forest ecosystems have not been proved so far. Indirect effects of certain components on plants and plant ecosystems (e.g. the contribution of methane and fluorochlorohydrocarbons to the greenhouse effect) seem to be more important than direct effects.
