The author illustrates with examples taken from Hamburg University that the instructors most important activity is to control and guide the work of thesis and doctor's degree makters. In the course of this work the cooperation of wood industry, educational experience and research can be realised. The goals of the elaboration of student-lecturer may widen the subjects of lectures, enrich science and have a practical application. He summarises all the common research work in topic groups that has been done in the last 30 years at the Institute for Wood Biology of Hamburg University giving a detailed list of the main ones. The most important exmined topic groups are as follows: - wood destroyers: oak wilt caused by Ceratocystis fagacearum - impregnability of wood, improvement of liquid spreading by pre- treatment of wood - saturation methods, their improvement with high preassure - environ protection; prevention of sweating of Scotch pine impregrated with tar oil.
