- AbstractWithout its most southern part Sweden belongs to the boreal climate zone. Silviculture is there limited by low Temperatures allowing only an annual yield of less than 5 cbm/ha, in large areas less than 3 cbm. The low yields and high costs of manpower favoured the development of high mechanization levels in harvesting and the transition to large clearcuts. The new Swedish forest legislation demands a silviculture in which the preservation of biodiversity is of the same value as timber production. On moist sites with a very low natural fire frequency single tree cutting may be the most close-to-natur method, but under boreal conditions it is only possible with remarcable yield losses. For most sites smaller clearcuts with remaining groups and stripes of trees and single trees are the most adaequate measure to preserve more biodiversity. In young stands favouring birch and aspen the amount of hardwoods in the stands will increase. Between 1970 and 1990 large areas in North Sweden were replanted after clearcutting with Pinus contorta, the yield of which surpassed that of Pinus sylvestris up to 30%. Environmentalists critizise these stands as unnatural plantations. Actually however there seems to be no essential difference in the flora and fauna between young stands of both species.
