- AbstractAbout 80% of the total forest surface area or 88% of the growing stock in the Republic of Croatia are under the management of the Public state enterprise "Hrvatske sume" (Croatian forests), p.o. Zagreb. Other public forests comprise 2% and the private forests 18% of the overall surface area. The public forests have been managed on the principle of sustainibility for more than 150 years. About 90% of these forests are almost natural in structure belonging to the first or second generation after the felling of the primeval forests in Croatia, which were naturally reforested. The Croatian forests are composed out of the following species: beech (37%), pedunculate oak (14%) and sessile oak (10%), while the other species belong to more than 30 kinds of broadleaved and confireous trees (17%). The main objectives of the management of the "Hrvatske sume" are maintaning the natural structure of the forests and the ecological balance of the forest ecosystem, advancing the ecological and social functions of forests and increasing the quality of raw timber.
