The Tôkyô University Forest in Hokkaidô is situated in the central part of Hokkaidô and covers an area of about 22,800 ha. It is located in the mixed forest zone with coniferous and broad-leaved species which is called "Pan-mixed forest zone", lying between the cool-temperate and the sub-boreal zone. The greater part of the forest (75%) is covered with natural forests. Forest area of the University Forest was the virgin forest. For the protection of nature, reserved stands were established in the University Forest. The total area of reserved stand is 1.520 ha, which is 6,7% of the University forest area. In the forest reserves were designated large scale permanent plots in different forest ecossystems, such as boreal forests and riparian forests.
