The conventional current meter method is not suitable to measure discharge in an appropriate way in many steep and tubulent torrents and rivers. Dilution methods can very often help in such situations. The dilution methods used by the Swiss National Hydrological and Geological Survey are briefly described and some conclusions pointed out. The experiences gained in Nepal show that these operational methods can be fully integrated into the operational hydrological surveys in developing countries.
