Abstract
The paper contains a quantitative analysis of higher order branching and a simple model of branching patterns in Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.). The number and length of internodal laterals were positively correlated with the length of parental shoot. The shoots were marked by a special numerical code which involved the order of branching, the origin and position of shoot inside the branching pattern. The code specified each shoot an enabled quick sorting operations. Cumulative lengths (cumL) both of different ordered and different aged shoots together with some calculated ratios made it possible to simulate branching patterns in Norway spruce. The distributions of shoot elevation ange, divergence and azimuthal (AMG) ones were established according to the data measured on the sample branches taken away from a tree crown. Generally, the elevation angle showed decreasing trend towards the higher orders andthe more recent shoots. Divergence angle was found independent on the order or branching and showed only a little variation.
