The present study investigates the goodness of fit of the beta, Weibull and gamma distribution to model diameter distributions in even-aged stand of Norway spruce and compares algorithms to estimate the parameters of the model. It is based on experimental data from permanent sample plots, obtained from the Forestry Research Institute of the Lower Saxony. In subsequent regression analyses the parameter estimates were regressed on stand characteristics, with sample size being used as a covariate. In addition, the relationship between age and the parameter estimates was investigated in sample plots, which had been re-measured repeatedly and therefore represented a time series.
