In the time after 1990 alternatives were looked for on windfall plots to establish oak stands as well as to reduce laborconsuming and expensive tending of young plantations. As a possibility to stock such plots away from intensive care, regeneration trials by planting oak in net-design were established in the forest districts Johanniskreuz and Morbach in spring 1991 and 1993. The results obtained from both trials allow the following preliminary conclusions: - Planting oak in net-design presents an alternative to extensive stand establishment of oak mixed stands and in view of minimizing tending costs. - The positive effect of associate tree species should be utilized consequently. - Adequate associate trees should be included in the economic planning. - Timely and careful tending interventions in the interspace and promoting vital trees from natural succession are required. - On pseudogley sites in the Hunsrück planting oak in net-design is an alternative to converting Norway spruce single-species stands into oak mixed stands.
