Abstract
Natural forest regeneration of windthrow areas was monitored during the first eight years after the storms "Vivian" and "Wiebke" 1990 on four research plots in four different regions in mountain forests of the Swiss Alps. In each plot the number of saplings higher than 20 cm was compared between three different treatments: (1) untouched windthrow, (2) clearing and (3) clearing and planting treatment. In 1998, eight years after the storm, 841, 1.067, 1.986, and 2.037 plants / ha were counted in the four research plots respectively. The differences between treatments were not yet consistent. 14 species were found, of which Acer pseudoplatanus, Picea abies, Sorbus aucuparia, and Salix spec. were most frequent. Almost all regeneration had to establish by germination after the storm, because there was hardly any regeneration stock from the previous stand. The increase in number of saplings was rather slow. In treatment three 2.000-2.600 saplings per ha were planted. Natural regeneration did not reach the numbers of planted trees within eight years. Plantation brought a remarkable lead compared to natural regeneration.
