Abstract
Reforestation of windfall areas will be based on natural regeneration or planting. The young trees contain a lot of different fungi. To estimate whether these fungi are dangerous for the young plants or not, one have to analyse the species and their role in the ecosystem. Samples were taken from (1) an untouched windfall area, (2) a cleared windfall area and (3) a plantation with young trees of a nursery and additionally young beeches, some of them were artificially mycorrhized with Paxillus involutus. The mainroot and the stem of the young trees (beech, birch, fir and pine) were surface sterilized and transferred to isolation media. The nursery trees possess their own flora, their roots contain more pathogens as the roots of the natural regenerated trees. The dominant species of the natural regeneration were Phialocephala fortinii and DSE (dark septide endophyte). Under optimal conditions, the endophytes cause no or only little harm to the young trees, but under stress conditiones the fungi may be the crucial factors for the selection of the individual plant. Reforestation by natural regeneration of mycorrhized plants are favorable.
