- AbstractThe paper presents a pollen diagram derived from a coring in the so called "mire island" on the eastern shore of lake Obersee near Lunz (Lower Austria, 1113 msm). The water level lowered considerably at the end of the older Atlanticum (6500 BP) and raised again afterwards. At the beginning of subboreal (5000 BP) peat began to accumulate; first Carex-Bryidae, later Sphagnum. Eriophorum-peat. Today the site is overgrown by Molinia and trees of Picea abies. In the older Atlanticum spruce and elm prevailed in the forest surrounding the lake, during the younger Atlanticum beech and fir came in an during Subboreal and Subatlanticum these two tree species dominated the forest together with spruce. Human influence sets in relatively late in mediaval times. In the last century the lake was dammed up to gain water for floating timber downhill.
