- AbstractFive species of the genus Ips De Geer, including a recent classified one, have been described from the Himalayan Region in the last century. Nearly all of the older descriptive material has been collected in the north western part of the Himalaya. Specimens from the east have been collected and investigated. Examination of the collected material, specimen of the Dehra Dun Museum, Schedl collection in Vienna and specimen from private collections gave the following results: Ips longifolia Stebb. breeds on chir pine, Pinus roxburghii, and is present all over the host distribution area, West to East Himalaya. Ips stebbingi, Strohm. (syn. Ips ribbentropi Stebb., syn. Ips blandfordi Stebb.) occurs from the central Himalaya, Nepal to the west, reaching the most western part of the pine and spruce distribution in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The principal host is Pinus wallichiana, but Pinus gerardiania and Picea smithiana (syn. P. morinda) are also host species. Ips stebbingi is distributed in the higher elevations, about 2000 m. Picea spinolosa is the main host of Ips schmutzenhoferi Holzschuh but Larix griffithiana is also a perfect breeding source. The taxonomy published by Beeson, withdrawing the Stebbing classification, can be replaced by the other authors' work. St. Wood acknowledged never Beesons's withdrawals but could not study specimens from the Eastern Himalaya.
