- AbstractSince its historical beginning, forestry has been determined by its social conditions. The conception and application of the principle of sustainability was the answer to the deficiency of materials, mainly timber for warmth energy. Forestry existed without conflicts, when its determination corresponded with social demands. Forestry is living in conflicts, when the reality of existing forests and the given social conditions and expectance are different. In urbanized and technically developed countries with sustained forest management, there is no longer a timber deficiency, and so it cannot be felt by the society. The situation in these countries has changed as never before. In the beginning of this modified situation there is the phenomenon of global urbanisation. In two ways it leeds to a transformed social consciousness: 1. Urbanisation/technical evolution - destruction of the environment - protection of natur/environment. 2. Urbanisation/technical evolution - stress - social problems - psychological reactions: denial of future, nostalgy of an uninjured nature. The human society changes more quickly than the forests and forestry. So there is a discrepancy between the historically grown reality of forests and social demands. Forestry has to face criticism running behind. These phenomena are described in detail, and the presented paper is discussing possibilities to solve these problems.
