Abstract
Increasing concern over air pollution as a possible cause of forest decline has led to an intensification of research into the extent and characteristics of air pollution in Europe, and the effect of these pullutants on trees. The chief air pollutants affecting trees and their geographical distribution, the mechanisms by which they are brought into contact with trees and the ways in which trees respond to them are identified. Special factors determining the influence of air pollution on urban trees are discussed. The trend of reducing sulphur dioxide emissions and the probable future requirement for catalytic converts to reduce hydrocarbon emissions from car exhausts indicate sustained improvement in the quality of the urban environment to the continuing benefit of urban trees and the choice of species that can be used by arboriculturists.
