- AbstractThis paper reports results from an old experiment with topping and precommercial thinning in Scots pine. The topping was done 1941 and the thinning to various spacings was carried out 1952 when the mean height was about 1 m. The experiment is located in Mala in northern Sweden and was established by J-E Wretlind former forest officer in charge. The experiment consists partly of a comparison between topped and untopped plots and partly a comparison between different spacings in precommercial thinning. The spacings which are represented are 1,5 m, 2,0 m abd 2,5 m. One unthinned treatment is also included in this part. Total yield of unthinned topped and unthinned untopped plots is 174 m3/ha respective 166 m3/ha. The distribution of the stems by diameter at breast height is more widespread in the untopped plots. The total yield is highest in the unthinned plots and lowest in the hardest thinning. The production of thick stems is however higher in the hardest thinning.
