Abstract
Science about forest history in Germany is in general defined as teaching and research about the changing relationships between woods, society and forestry during the last centuries and millenniums. Necessities of research in forest-history exist in two different groups of scientific disciplines. On the one side among forestry-related research branches like e.g. forest-policy, landscape tending, silviculture, growth and yield, pest-management, forest-technology, forest-economics, forest-inventory, forest-markets, forest-law, road-construction and others. On the other side among research-branches tangent to forestry like e.g. history of settlements, history of economics, history of agriculture, history of technology, history of the environment, history of ecology, history of the arts, history of law, history of the landscape and other (see table 1, page 33). The foundation assembly of the section of forest history in the DVFFA (German Association of Forest Research Institutes) at the 25th of June 1998 in Freiburg/Germany accordingly determined, that the methodical starting points and the research themes to treat with should be chosen as possible and that the connections to neighbouring branches (social-history, history of economics, history of environment) should be developed. The contacts to neighbouring countries will be intesified as well. By using modern date-technology from now on it will be possible to realise the exchange of ieas among the members and the publication of results of the study group.
