Silvicultural objectives and decisions cannot be economically implemented without applying forest technology. Silviculture and forest technology are therefore partners on the road to a common goal. Selecting correct techniques that do not unnecessarily burden woodlands and the environment is an important responsibility when assessing technology. When it comes to deciding what is "correct", there are many very different opinions, and objectivity can only be attained through appropriated investigations. Numerous technical developments originated from silvicultural requrements and demands, and have primarily had a positive impact. Now that high-tech machinery has been implemented, risks and side-effects have become distinctly noticeable, which we can overcome and which must be minimized as far as possible. The poor forest enterprise yields force not only economic technical measures, but reduced biological production as well. An interdisciplinary forestry education ist the guarantee that foresters will deal responsibly when weighing the ecological, economical, technical and human objectives.
