- AbstractThe following paper offers a brief overview of the results from the project "Ecosystematic Studies in the Limestone Alps - Achenkirch Altitude Profiles". The contributions include descriptions of the Northern Tyrolean Limestone Alps and assessment of risks (mainly of risks due to the input of pollutants or of pasturing). They are based on investigations carried out in the area of Achenkirch and on all-Austrian monitoring surveys. The studies refer to the rhizosphere. Depositions of SO2 and NOx are significant in valley bottoms only, while the ozone input increases with altitude. Proton inputs do not seriously affect the carbonate-influenced soils, but long-term effective pollutants, such as nitrogen and heavy metals, may constitute risks. Other important stress factors are harvesting, game and forest pasturing; this applies especially to protection forests.
