Abstract
Ovule receptivity and pollen viability were studied in order to determine the cause of low seed production in the hybridization of Larix. Ovule receptivity may be less than 48 hours for samples kept in a temperate greenhouse. Some external morphological characters of the female conelet may be used as indicators of ovule receptivity; specifically, cone curvature upwards at a 90 angle with respect to the short shoot and full opening of the bracts. Pollen stored at 4C may remain viable for at least 3 to 12 months as estimated by fluorochromatic reaction.
