Acorns of Quercus robur L. (m.c. 42%) were progressively frozen to -1 Grad, - 3 Grad, -5 Grad, -7 Grad, -9 Grad, -11 Grad, -13 Grad, -15 Grad and -17 Grad C at a freezing rate 0.2 Grad C/min and stored in each temperature for 15 min. An exothermic increase of temperature measured between the cotyledons was recorded at -10 +- 2 Grad C. Freezing of acorns to -7 Grad C appeared to be safe for their radicles (in germination tests) and to -9 Grad C for plumules (in shoot emegence tests). The acorns did not survive freezing to - 17 Grad C.
