The activity of selected enzymes and the cellulose decomposition rate were determined at 6-week intervals in mull, moder and mor humus during three years. Activities of dehydrogenases, proteases, urease and cellulose decomposition rate in situ reflected correctly the global biological state of the investigated types of humus. The activity of phosphatase did not reflect correctly the global biological activity of the investigated types of humus. Maximum enzyme activities appeared in different seasons of a year. A sharp maximum of cellulose decomposition rate could be observed during summer and a well-marked minimum in spring and autumn periods.
